Dec 6, 2008: Holiday Party at Marisa's House

You're invited to the Semi-Official PRO Holiday Party! Significant others, and children are welcome too, of course! We've decided to to a White Elephant-ish Gift Exchange for those who want to participate. The gifts should be up to $20, and (because I have been informed that White Elephant implies you get things that are tacky on purpose but I don't know what else to call it...) try to get something that you think would be generally awesome and coveted by all because present stealing is not only encouraged but incorporated into the rules! Hope to see you all there! PS - Several people have graciously offered to bring food. Stephen and I want to make this as fun and stress free as possible so please just relax and bring yourself and maybe a white elephant gift. If you are so afflicted with the spirit of holiday cheer that you just can't help yourself, distilling that cheer into a bottle of wine or a six pack would be welcome.

Dec 10, 2008: Psychiatry Movie Night - Little Children at Jasmine Uniquely Chinese

Please join us for the next Psychiatry Movie Night at Jasmine Uniquely Chinese in Addison. Movie is Little Children . We'll meet and get food at 6:30PM, showtime is at 7. Dr. John Sadler will be leading the post-movie discussion. Residents, fellows, students, faculty, and significant others are all welcome! THE MOVIE: Little Children . 2006. Kate Winslet, Patrick Wilson, Jennifer Connelly. Running time 137 min. *** Click here to watch the trailer *** From the Amazon.com review : Kate Winslet operates at a galaxy-class level in Little Children, Todd Field's gratifyingly grown-up look at unhappy suburbia. Winslet is magnificent, in an Oscar-nominated performance, as a stroller-pushing mom who becomes attracted to a passive househusband (Patrick Wilson). Their slow-burning infidelity (Field wisely allows time to pass in this unhurried film) is contrasted with a more sensational subplot, about a convicted pedophile (Jackie Earle Haley, also Oscar nominated) returning to the neighborhood to live with his mother (Phyllis Somerville). Field, who brought his civilized approach to In the Bedroom, uses a deliberately literary style here, including a device with a narrator who sounds as though he's sitting at our side as he reads from Tom Perotta's novel. (The narrator is a superb touch--his cultivated voice distances us from the sloppy passions of the characters.) The film's biggest miscalculation is a self-appointed neighborhood vigilante (Noah Emmerich) determined to make life miserable for the pedophile. But Wilson is appropriately nebulous, Jennifer Connelly solid as his wife, and Haley (child star of the Bad News Bears movies), as the creepy, childlike molester, found himself rediscovered after a long career layoff. There's decent acting here, but Winslet is in a zone of her own, with so much emotional honesty and subtlety of expression that she transforms a good movie into a must-see. LOCATION and FOOD: We've reserved a private room at Jasmine Uniquely Chinese Restaurant in Addison. They will have a special menu for us with your choice of entree, egg roll, soup, and drink all for $12.95. There is also a bar. No need to pay in advance, but because we get the room for no charge, the owner asks that everyone order something. Website is here . Directions: Take Lemmon to Marsh, turn right on Belt Line. After the second light (Commercial Dr), look for a red brick building on your right with a red lighted sign. See the map below or click the links at the top of the page. (It's faster to go up Lemmon/Marsh rather than the tollway at that time of day.) schedule of upcoming movie nights

Feb 10, 2009: King Tut! at Dallas Museum of Art

We're going to see King Tut! Not sure on the date or details yet - I just picked a random date for a placeholder. The exhibit is here from Oct-May. We can get a group rate of $24 per person on weekdays (down from $27.50) with groups of 10 or more. On the 3rd Friday of each month the museum is open til midnight, but then there is no group rate and the tickets cost $32.50. Perhaps after the first of the year PRO will have the funds to subsidize part of the cost... Lots more info on the Dallas Museum of Art Website
